In a joint statement by the heads of diplomacy of Germany and France, Heiko Maas and Jean-Yves Le Drian regretted Russia’s refusal to attend the meeting under the Normandy format. The politicians warned Moscow against violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Earlier, the spokesman of Prime Minister Boris Johnson was also asked about the concentration of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine. – We see a disturbing situation at the border. Our support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine is unwavering and we will support this country in the face of Russian hostility, he said.
NATO chief: we stand on the side of Ukraine
Meanwhile, at the Headquarters NATO’s head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, is visiting Brussels on Monday. – We have just discussed the security situation in and around Ukraine. In recent weeks, we have witnessed a large and unusual concentration of Russian forces near Ukraine’s borders, similar to the Russian expansion (armed forces) in Crimea and the Black Sea region earlier this year. (…) We are monitoring the situation very closely, said NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg after the meeting with the Ukrainian minister.
– Any further provocation or aggressive action by Russia would be a serious problem. We call on Russia to be transparent about its military activities. It is important to prevent escalation and reduce tensions, he added.
Stoltenberg announced that NATO was on the side of Ukraine. – We do not and will not accept the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. We urge Russia to stop supporting militants in the Donbas. All NATO members are united in condemning Russia’s behavior, he said.
He stressed that NATO and its allies continued to provide Ukraine with significant political and practical support. – NATO’s support for Ukraine is not a threat to Russia. The exercises of NATO and its allies in the Black Sea region are defensive and transparent, he pointed out.
