A decision on the location of the third nuclear power plant is ahead of us – said Jacek Sasin, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State Assets. – I think that in the fall of this year we will know the location – he noted. He emphasized that the most obvious place is Bełchatów. At the same time, he reminded that there is an obligation to present two alternative sites for the power plant. “That will be the case here as well,” he assured.

Sasin on Friday in Program 1 of Polish Radio indicated that renewable energy sources they can complement the energy mix, “but in no case can they be its foundation”.

Third nuclear power plant. Sasin: decision on location later this year

– Nuclear energy must be the basis for such a reliable energy sector. We’re going in that direction. These two investments, which can be said already, are a fact that they are already underway, they are in the initial implementation process (…). We are facing a decision as to the location of the third nuclear power plant, and the second one to be built under this government program implemented by the state – said Sasin.

When asked when this decision will be made, he replied: “I even spoke yesterday with the minister (of climate and environment – editor’s note) Anna Moscowthat when it comes to the location, definitely this year.” – I think that in the fall of this year we will know the location – he pointed out.

According to Sasin, Bełchatów is the most obvious place when it comes to the location of the third nuclear power plant. But that still needs a lot of research. Certain conditions must be met, e.g. geological, seismic, access to water and many other things that still need to be investigated – he pointed out.

He reminded that there is an obligation to present two alternative locations for the power plant. “That will be the case here as well,” he said.

Offers for the construction of power plants

Offers for the construction of nuclear power plants under the Polish Nuclear Energy Program (PPEJ) were submitted by American Westinghouse, French EDF and Korean KHNP. At the beginning of November last year the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution in which it indicated that the first power plant is to be built in the Westinghouse AP1000 technology.

Earlier in Seoul, ZE PAK, PGE and KHNP signed a letter of intent to develop a plan to build a power plant in Pątnów based on Korean technology. According to government representatives, this is a project independent of the PPEJ.

In November 2022, the Polish government indicated that the technology for the first power plant under the Polish Nuclear Energy Program (PPEJ) would be provided by Westinghouse and the power plant should be built in Pomerania. PPEJ provides for the construction of two power plants in two different locations. According to the declarations of government representatives, the question of choosing the technology and partner for the second power plant under the PNPP is still open.

“Until we have alternative energy sources, we will not move away from coal”

In Sasin’s opinion, today Poland is energy-safe. – Also because we have our own fuel, i.e. coal – he said. He added that 70 percent of energy in Poland comes from coal.

– Today we are looking for and working on new possibilities, for example on the atom, we are developing RES. But until we have alternative energy sources, we will not move away from coal. Regardless of the pressures exerted on us – whether at home or abroad. Because the most important thing is the energy security of a million Poles – stressed Sasin on Friday. The deputy prime minister was also asked about the protests of four German federal states against the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. As the media wrote, it concerns Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony and Berlin. – We will explain all doubts to our partners. I do not think (…) that these protests can effectively block the development of nuclear energy in Poland – assessed Sasin. At the same time, he stressed that arrangements with neighboring countries are necessary. – We will make such arrangements. We are also preparing all the documentation to fulfill this obligation to agree, he assured. The head of MAP pointed out that Poland will use very safe technology in the construction of nuclear power plants. “Both American and Korean technology is safe, clean, and poses no threat to anyone,” he stressed.
