Austria plans to introduce a lockdown for unvaccinated people. On Thursday, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg presented the roadmap, and final decisions will be taken on Sunday. In Austria, the number of coronavirus infections has increased sharply in recent weeks. Queues of people willing to vaccinate are lining up in front of hospitals.

Schallenberg also announced the need to discuss compulsory vaccinations for certain professional groups, especially in the health sector. Due to the bad pandemic situation in Austria, the German government on Friday classified this country as a high-risk area, which will apply from Sunday.

Consequently, unvaccinated people returning to Germany will be quarantined.

This move by Germany was perceived as bad news, among others in the Austrian hotel industry. “This move is hitting us hard,” commented Susanne Kraus-Winkler from the hotel association of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKOe).

Since the end of October, an increase in people willing to vaccinate has been visible. In Upper Austria, where there is the highest number of cases in the country, vaccinations can be made in hospitals since yesterday. “The number of applicants was huge from the very first day” – informed the Nachrichten portal. “The vast majority of vaccinations were for a booster dose. Obviously these vaccinations are needed, but we would have preferred more first vaccinations,” commented Nachrichten Jutta Oberweger, spokeswoman for the Upper Austrian hospital network.

Some doctors unofficially criticize the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčopening vaccination points in clinics and hospitals. “Hospitals, which are already barely drowning, now have to take care of additional vaccinations. This is insolence” – quotes Nachrichten from an anonymous doctor.

Upper Austria has announced another major vaccination campaign for the coming weekend as a federal state. I want to focus primarily on the first vaccinations. Additional vaccination points will also be temporarily activated by the Red Cross.
