Doctor Grażyna Cholewińska-Szymańska, referring in “Fakty po Faktach” to today’s epidemic data, assessed that this is “the tip of the iceberg”. According to her, “at the moment the results can be multiplied by two”. Professor Jerzy Duszyński from the Polish Academy of Sciences estimated that “50-60 thousand deaths due to COVID-19 could have been avoided.” – Huge omissions cost the lives of many people – he pointed out.
The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday Fr. 53,420 new confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection. This is the highest daily balance of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Poland.
A week ago, the Ministry of Health reported 30,586 confirmed infections. Today’s infection rate is 22,834 higher. That’s an increase of 74 percent.
Dr Cholewińska-Szymańska: today’s data is the tip of the iceberg
Grażyna Cholewińska-Szymańska, MD, specialist in infectious diseases, head of the Provincial Infectious Hospital in Warsaw, and professor Jerzy Duszyński, president of the Polish Academy of Sciences, chairman of the COVID advisory team, referred to the epidemic in “Fakt after Faktach”. 19.
According to Cholewińska-Szymańska, today’s data “is the tip of the iceberg”. – We medics are aware of this because the figures officially given in the statistics refer only to cases officially registered in the electronic EWP system – she said.
As she added, “there is a very large group of already infected and ill patients in Poland who buy tests in a pharmacy or hypermarket and perform them at home”. – If the result is positive, of course they do not reveal this test in the electronic system and official statistics do not see it – she said.
According to the doctor, “at the moment, the results can be multiplied by two.” – We know that there are regions in Poland where the referrals of Primary Health Care doctors to the test are really poorly used – she added.
“These are huge omissions and we already know that they cost the lives of many people”
In the opinion of professor Jerzy Duszyński, “there is no will to fight decisively.” “At the moment we are in a situation where we all know that a great wave is coming, inevitable right now. Our main demand for several months has been to flatten this wave in time, so that it does not flood hospitals at the same time when suddenly there will be tens of thousands of patients there, said the chairman of the COVID-19 advisory team.
– We believe that these are huge omissions and we already know that they cost the lives of many people, 50-60 thousand deaths that could have been avoided. This is, in my opinion, a huge mistake – he added.
“We know that every bed will be occupied in two weeks”
According to Duszyński, “we are still discussing and not implementing any procedures that would allow us to limit the speed of virus penetration”. – We already have the first signs of this wave, which mean that not only in a moment patients will be massively sent to hospitals, but the IT system is clogging up – he pointed out.
Doctor Cholewińska-Szymańska, head of the Provincial Infectious Hospital in Warsaw, said that “as of today we do not have a very high occupancy rate”. – But we grit our teeth because we know that in two weeks each bed will be occupied – she said.
She added that at the moment in Mazovia, out of 2900 beds, 1400 are occupied. “There is a buffer limit between 30 and 40 percent, but in two or three days things could change,” she said.
