There are already so many people suffering from COVID-19 that it is impossible not to notice it. I think that at the moment several tens of thousands, maybe even around a hundred thousand Poles are sick every day – said Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an expert on COVID-19 of the Supreme Medical Council, on TVN24. Speaking about collective immunity, the guest of “Wstańsz i pozna” on TVN24 emphasized that “since the emergence of the Omicron variant, the situation has changed.”
Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an expert on COVID-19 of the Supreme Medical Council, referred to the high number of COVID-19 cases in the morning “Wstańsz i Know” on TVN24.
As he emphasized, “we have had a wave of COVID-19 since the end of August.” – We talk about it, but no one wants to hear it, that the number of sick people is increasing week by week. And now there are so many sick people that it is impossible not to notice it. I think that at the moment several tens of thousands, maybe even around a hundred thousand Poles are sick every day, he said.
He noted that “these numbers are so big that it is starting to be visible.” – For example in the number of layoffs, the number of people who have to stay, do not go to work or even go to hospital – he added.
When asked about herd immunity, Grzesiowski admitted that “unfortunately, there is a problem with this.” – Because the virus is constantly changing and subsequent waves were caused by subsequent mutations. First there was the alpha variant, beta, then delta, and since the omicron variant the situation has changed, he noted.
– We have many variants circulating at the same time. The problem here is that contracting one variant does not provide immunity against another variant. So talking about herd immunity here is unfortunately a fiction, because if the virus were stable, our antibodies would actually protect us after the disease. And because it changes all the time, it’s as if we had COVID all over again, the disease all over again – added the expert.
Expert on “viral soup”
Grzesiowski, when asked whether it was possible that, for example, one variant would dominate in Warsaw and the other in Krakow, replied that “probably not”. – It’s more likely that we have such a mixture of variants throughout the country. Such data is available, for example, from Great Britain or from… Netherlands. Where these variants are monitored, it is simply virus soup, he emphasized.
At the same time, he added that the most common symptoms are related to the Omicron variant. – Most often it is fever, dry cough, headache, muscle pain, weakness. This is such a set of symptoms. Of course, depending on whether the person suffering from the disease is younger or older, whether they are healthy or have any additional diseases, other symptoms occur, he said.
The TVN24 guest noted that “at the moment, the main threat is to people whom we have been talking about from the beginning, that they are the most harmed, i.e. people over 50 and people with chronic diseases.”
– These people suffer the most from COVID, because they develop complications often resulting from their underlying disease. Either way, the factor that causes these complications is the SARS-CoV-2 virus, i.e coronavirus. And that is why we should constantly remind that the wave of diseases continues, that we should protect these people through non-pharmacological interventions, i.e. masks, disinfection, distance, avoiding crowded, poorly ventilated rooms, and we should vaccinate these people before the season – he pointed out.
