Almost 24,000 new coronavirus infections were reported on Friday, 403 people died. The Polish government does not introduce any restrictions – despite the recommendations of doctors and experts from the Prime Minister’s Medical Council. There are increasingly younger patients in the wards who require the help of ECMO, i.e. an artificial heart-lung machine. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.

On Thursday, the 14-year-old was in a serious condition at the hospital in Ostrów Wielkopolski. – The PCR test obtained during the stay was already positive – says the hospital spokesman, Dr. Adam Stangret. The boy died. According to the spokesman for the hospital, he was not vaccinated. It is not yet known what caused the death of the 14-year-old.

– There is a prosecution in progress. There will be a section that will explain the cause of death. We know that the child was treated on an outpatient basis with typically infectious symptoms, adds Dr. Stangret.

In turn, in Poznań, in a clinical hospital, two patients are connected to the ECMO. – These are young patients – about 40 years old – points out the head of the department, prof. Krzysztof Kusza. He admits that the men are not vaccinated.

Disturbing information is also coming from the Central Teaching Hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Warsaw. Here, out of 17 devices for ECMO therapy, nine are used by COVID-19 patients. – At the moment, people of 20-30 years old are connected to ECMO, which we have not had so far. This is really a wave of a pandemic of young and unvaccinated people – emphasizes Dr. Konstanty Szułdrzyński, MD.

The head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the Hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration draws attention to another group of patients under ECMO. “Until now, a third were pregnant or just after giving birth,” he says.

ECMO can save the lives of seriously ill patients with COVID-19 – it is a technique of extracorporeal blood oxygenation. The inclusion criteria for therapy are restrictive. – These are patients who should be younger than 50 years old, must be with a BMI below 30 and under ventilation for no longer than seven days – explains Dr. n. med. Paweł Nadziakiewicz from SCCS in Zabrze.

– ECMO does not heal, it is a bridge that allows time to regenerate the lungs or wait for a lung transplant – explains Dr. Katarzyna Rutkowska from SCCS in Zabrze.

Medics appeal to young people to vaccinate against COVID-19

Last night 23,242 new cases of coronavirus infection were detected. 403 people died. – I am begging you, I am appealing, let us vaccinate ourselves, because we are really at a critical moment. Our life depends on whether we get vaccinated, says prof. Robert Gałązkowski.
