Coronavirus. The fifth wave. Epidemic situation

The Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that research has confirmed 34,088 new cases of coronavirus infection in Poland, 25 people with COVID-19 have died. In total, 4 518 218 cases have been confirmed since March 4, 2020, when the first SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected in Poland. A total of 103,844 people from COVID-19 died.

The ministry also said that “as a result of sequencing the virus genome in Poland, 2,232 cases of coronavirus in the omicron version have already been detected, which constitutes 35 percent of all sequenced samples”.

Fighting the pandemic

In the published by MZ last week COVID-19 strategy, developed for the fifth wave of the pandemic, it was noted that what is currently the priority – and which is largely due to the specificity of the course of infection with the omicron variety, which is faster disease development – is primarily: strengthening and promoting the importance of preventive vaccinations and increasing the availability of tests for COVID-19.

According to the strategy, solutions are to be implemented to strengthen outpatient care, i.e. for patients in the early stages of the disease or after a history of disease, whose treatment does not require hospitalization. Also among the priorities is increasing the base for inpatient treatment. The current – as emphasized in the document – are, inter alia, principles of social distancing, disinfection and wearing masks in confined spaces.
