Professor Andrzej Fal, president of the Polish Society of Public Health, talked about the current number of infections and deaths due to COVID-19, as well as the new variant of the coronavirus omicron on TVN24. – It is really bad and it seems to me that even talking about a new variant of the virus at the moment does not change much from the point of view of Poland, because we have an epidemic that is not caused by the new variant of the coronavirus, but is caused by the old one, if you can say so, that is delta plus, he said. He added that we should observe the omicron.

The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday about 19,074 new cases of coronavirus infection SARS-CoV-2. The ministry also said that 526 people suffering from COVID-19 have died. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,540,061 infections have been confirmed in Poland, 83,583 of those infected have died.

Professor Andrzej Fal, president of the Polish Society of Public Health, said on TVN24 that the percentage of dying in Poland is very high compared to other countries. – It is really bad and it seems to me that even talking about a new variant of the virus at the moment does not change much from the point of view of Poland, because we have an epidemic that is not caused by the new variant of the coronavirus, but is caused by the old one, if you can say so, that is delta plus. Therefore, we should observe the omicron, we should think about the omicron in the context of possibly future immunization, but today, here and now, we have a problem with the delta and we need to deal with it – he added.

Fal said the omicron “potentially appears to be a dangerous variant” because it has at least 50 mutations. – This gives a very high probability that he may be largely immune to immunization, that is, to those antibodies produced by vaccination, which may require additional treatment in the future – he noted.

Fal: the new restrictions are very mild for the situation we are in

They will come into force on Wednesday new restrictions epidemic, which are to apply until December 17. The government’s introduction of the “alert package” is linked to fears of the spread of the omicron coronavirus variant.

The President of the Polish Society of Public Health, when asked if the new restrictions would help to stop the fourth wave and the omicron, stressed that the more fundamental the restrictions, the more they help. – I think we waited long enough. I believe that those introduced at the moment must be done. I think they are very mild for the situation we are in, he assessed.

On November 26, the WHO described the new coronavirus variant detected in southern African countries as “worrying”. The variety known so far as B.1.1.529 received the name of the Greek letter omicron.
