The recommendation to administer a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to all adults is likely to be. Work on it is currently underway, said Dr. Konstanty Szułdrzyński, a member of the Medical Council. He also assured that “the benefits of taking the third dose exceed many times all possible and possible risks”.
In early October, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended that a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Pfizer or Moderna be given to people with severely weakened immune systems at least 28 days after the second dose. She also reminded that the administration of an additional dose of BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 is safe and effective. At the same time, she made a reservation that the decision on whether to administer a booster dose rested with the Member States of the European Union.
In Poland, it is given to several groups, including those over 50 and healthcare professionals.
A member of the Medical Council at the prime minister, Dr. Konstanty Szułdrzyński from the Ministry of Interior and Administration hospital in Warsaw confirmed on Monday that work is underway on the recommendation regarding the administration of a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine to all interested adults. – Such a recommendation will most likely be. Work is currently underway and such a recommendation has not yet been announced – he explained.
Medical Council decision related to the EMA position
He added that the decision of the Medical Council is closely related to the position of the EMA. – We are in the European Union and we are trying to harmonize it all. Especially since EMA is research-driven, which is decisive for us. As with previous decisions on granting the possibility of a third vaccination, also now, the point is that after some time after taking the second dose, the immunity simply decreases – explained Szułdrzyński.
He reminded that, of course, everyone will have full voluntariness when it comes to adopting the vaccine. However, he assessed that a system such as in Italy should be introduced. There, without full vaccination, you cannot use most public places and even visit workplaces. “However, this is only my private opinion,” he pointed out.
Szułdrzyński: the benefits of the third dose outweigh any possible risks
Szułdrzyński also assessed that the results of the research clearly show that resistance to coronavirus decreases a few months after the second dose, also in young people.
He also indicated that antibodies “are often determined by such different methods that the results are very unreliable”. – We also do not have the processing capacity to check the resistance of each person individually. The vaccine is safe and effective, so we don’t want to make artificial exceptions to complicate matters. The benefits of taking the third dose are many times greater than all possible and possible risks, he said.
Nearly half a million people took the third dose
Earlier on Monday Deputy Minister of Health Waldemar Kraska he said in Polskie Radio 24 that “indeed, two weeks ago, the EMA issued a recommendation that a booster dose should be administered to people over the age of eighteen”. – I think that this week there will be a decision of the Medical Council that a dose for people over the age of eighteen will be allowed in our country – Kraska informed. The deputy head of the Ministry of Health assessed that the decision of the Medical Council “is a matter of two or three days”.
Later, in an interview with TVN24, he said that 470,000 people had taken this additional dose by Monday. – Poles want this booster dose – he assessed. He also assured that “we have a sufficient number of vaccines to give this dose to Poles.”
The decision to administer the third dose to adults was announced on Friday by the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski. “In the perspective of next week, when we will allow and set a date when each of us will be able to vaccinate with a third, resembling dose” – said the head of the Ministry of Health in Wirtualna Polska.
