A state of natural disaster will enter into force in Portugal, the country’s prime minister Antonio Costa announced on Thursday evening. This is related to the growing COVID-19 epidemic. Under the new restrictions, which will enter into force on December 1, only people with a valid negative SARS-CoV-2 test result will be allowed to arrive in Portugal.

The head of the Portuguese government, Antonio Costa, explained that due to the arrival of the fifth wave of COVID-19 in this country, it is necessary to limit social interactions in the run-up to the Christmas season, as well as in the first days of January 2022.

Costa recommended meeting other people in public places in the run-up to the holiday season after testing to confirm the absence of COVID-19.

The prime minister called on employers to direct their staff to work remotely from 1 December. He also confirmed that teleworking will be compulsory nationwide in the first week of 2022, and schools will close between January 1 and 10 and move to distance learning.

People will be admitted to Portuguese restaurants, gyms and hotels only on the basis of a COVID-19 passport. In turn, only people who have a current negative test for SARS-CoV-2 will be allowed to enter the premises of bars, discos, stadiums, as well as hospitals and retirement homes.

Anyone arriving in the country will have to test negative for the coronavirus. The prime minister specified that breaking this rule would incur a fine for airlines of EUR 20,000 for each passenger who arrived in Portugal without a valid test.

On the last day in Portugal, the highest number of new infections since July was detected – 3,150. Fifteen people suffering from COVID-19 have died.
