The Slovak government has decided to sell or hand over the unused doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine free of charge. The reason for this decision is the low interest in the preparation in the country. Only 14,000 Slovaks are waiting for his first or second dose.

In early March, the Slovak authorities imported 200,000 from Russia. of the contracted one million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine. The Ministry of Health now wants to give away or sell 160 thousand. doses. The authorities of Argentina and the Western Balkans are interested. Health Minister Vladimir Lengvarsky said Slovak citizens will only be able to register for Sputnik V vaccinations until the end of the month. The expiry date of the preparations expires in the summer.

Vaccine contract overshadowed by controversy

The import of Sputnik V to Slovakia was accompanied by unusual circumstances. Igor Matovicz, who was then the prime minister, contracted and brought the first batch of vaccines to the country without informing the government, coalition partners and President Zuzana Czaputova about it.

After the conflict in the coalition, Matovicz lost the post of prime minister, who became finance minister Eduard Heger. The former head of government took over the Heger ministry. One of the arguments that Matovicz used to defend his decision to import the vaccine was half a million Slovak residents who wanted to be vaccinated only with the Russian preparation.

With over 5 million inhabitants, Slovakia has fewer vaccinated people than the EU average. In some parts of the country, interest in vaccinations is very low. President Czaputova on Wednesday called on citizens to vaccinate, and pointed out to the rulers that they were doing little to take the drug against COVID-19.

At the same time, the epidemiological situation in Slovakia is improving, but some epidemiologists are sounding the alarm because a more infectious variant of the Delta coronavirus has been confirmed in the country. A person who came from Russia is infected.
