US President Joe Biden on Monday signed a bill that requires declassification of information related to the origin of the coronavirus, Reuters reported. The White House said in a statement that it will continue to review all classified information regarding the origin of the disease, listing potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“We need to get to the heart of origin COVID-19to ensure we can better prevent future pandemics. My administration will continue to review all classified information regarding the origin of COVID-19, including potential ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” the White House said in a statement.

“In implementing this legislation, my administration will declassify and release as much information as possible consistent with my constitutional mandate to protect against disclosure of information that could harm national security,” the president’s statement added.

The bill passed without opposition from both houses of parliament

The bill passed unopposed through the Senate and House of Representatives before being sent to the White House. The text states that there is reason to believe that the coronavirus pandemic originated in a laboratory in Wuhan. Therefore, the interview USA should disclose “as much information as possible” about the origin of the virus and make it available to the public. However, it was initially unclear what information would be released and when.

The debate over the origin of the coronavirus was revived last month when the Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Energy concluded that the pandemic probably originated from a leak from a Chinese lab, which Beijing denies.

Reuters recalls that the FBI also concluded that a laboratory leak was the likely cause of the pandemic. Four other U.S. agencies still assess that COVID-19 was likely the result of natural transmission, and two are undecided.
