The health of a patient from the south of Italy, who was diagnosed with the first infection with the omicron coronavirus variant in the country after returning from Africa, is good, said Italian doctors. The man was previously vaccinated against COVID-19.
All adults in the family infected with the new variant are vaccinated against the coronavirus. – The situation is under control, patient zero and his relatives have a very low amount of the virus, which in the case of adults is associated with the fact that they are after two doses of the vaccine – explained on Sunday the head of health service in the city of Caserta in Campania Ferdinando Russo.
Classes attended by an infected male’s children have been placed in quarantine.
Virologist’s opinion: the only tool we have is a vaccine
Renowned Italian virologist Ilaria Capua, working at the University of Florida, said the appearance of the omicron variant was normal. “I said many times that this virus would not go away, I also repeated it with great frustration and dissatisfaction, and it happened,” she told La Stampa. “There is nothing surprising about what is happening, as it has in other pandemics and other infectious diseases,” Capua said.
‘We know that the more the virus circulates in the unvaccinated population, the more it is possible to separate (new) variants. We know that in Africa, vaccination levels are very low, that some variants are taking their toll, and it is unlikely that this will be the last, Capua noted.
In the opinion of the expert, the omicron should be analyzed before you start to “terrorize people and raise the alarm”. ‘Europeans need to realize that the only tool we have is a vaccine,’ she added.
