The red volcanic alert was released in Costa Rica in connection with the outbreak of the Poas volcano. The eruption lasting for several days is accompanied by reproach of a huge amount of volcanic material – dust column rise to a height of over 4,000 meters. Ashes also settled in the surrounding rivers.
According to the Costarate National Council for Extraordinary Situations (CNE), a particularly intensive volcanic activity is recorded in the area of the Poas volcano. The volcano has been brushing dust for several months, but the last explosion turned out to be the strongest so far. Accompanying gas-fillers reached a height of over 4,000 meters.
Polluted air and water
In connection with the increased activity of the volcano, CNE decided to announce the red, highest volcanic alert in the immediate vicinity of the cone, i.e. throughout the entire area of the Poas National Park. Orange warnings apply in nearby cantons of Sarchi and Grecia, where the inhabitants were warned about the precipitation of volcanic ash and the irritating effect of gas on the respiratory tract. Sanitary services recommended wearing masks and placing wet cloths in the gaps of doors and windows to prevent the impurities from entering the rooms.
According to experts, the eruptions also released large amounts of ash into rivers, turning them into muddy, gray streams. CNE appealed to the residents to avoid contact with contaminated water. Experts are also worried that Lahara can form during rainfall – dangerous, very fast flowing rafting of volcanic mud.
A blow to tourism
As the Tico Times portal reported, the eruptions of the Poas volcano contributed to the decline in tourist traffic in a large part of Central Costa Rica. Vulcanic activity scared off visitors, leading to a sharp decrease in revenues of local companies. This even happened in areas that did not experience direct effects, such as ash precipitation or volcanic gas emissions.
