The COVID-19 pandemic was most likely caused by a leak from a Chinese laboratory – such conclusions, according to American media, were to be made by the US Department of Energy. The information comes from a classified report recently delivered to the White House and key members of Congress.
New intelligence has led the Department of Energy USA concluded that an unintentional leak from the laboratory in China most likely was the cause of the coronavirus pandemic, the American media reported, the “Wall Street Journal” on Sunday and the “New York Times” on Monday. Newspapers refer to the conclusions of a secret US Department of Energy report.
The newspapers do not say what exactly the intelligence information was based on this report. But many of the Department of Energy’s conclusions come from a network of national laboratories, some of which conduct their own biological research, rather than from traditional intelligence sources such as spies or interception of communications, according to the New York Times.
Media: leak from a Chinese laboratory
“These conclusions are a reversal of the Department of Energy’s earlier position that the origin of the virus is undetermined,” notes the “NYT”. But her insiders admitted that the evidence in the new report was “relatively weak” and that the Department of Energy’s conclusions were drawn with a “low level of certainty.” They added that although the information from the report had been passed on to other American institutions investigating the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, none of them had changed their earlier conclusions.
As the “NYT” points out, Americans believe that a thorough study of the origins of the pandemic may be important in improving the global response to future health crises. At the same time, they admit that it may be difficult or even impossible to determine the source of the coronavirus, given China’s opposition to further research on the subject. According to the scientists, however, it is responsible to explain how the pandemic that killed almost seven million people came about, and better understanding of its sources may help researchers better understand what (which pathogens – ed.) poses the greatest risk of further epidemics in the future.
Sources of the COVID-19 pandemic
Earlier, with a “medium level of certainty”, similar conclusions as the Department of Energy also reached the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It said the virus likely spread as a result of a failure in a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan where research on coronaviruses was being conducted. Four other US government agencies and the National Intelligence Council (NIC) believe, with a low degree of certainty, that the virus was most likely the result of natural transmission.
Security Advisor to the US President Jake Sullivan admits that the disunity of American institutions is visible. “There is currently no definitive answer from the intelligence community on this,” he said.
The COVID-19 virus first spread in Wuhan, China, no later than November 2019, according to a 2021 US intelligence report. Joe Biden shortly after taking office as president, he ordered intelligence agencies to investigate the origins of the pandemic. The decision came after criticism of a World Health Organization report stating that the virus originated in a laboratory was “extremely unlikely”. As the American newspaper reminds, the shape of this report was strongly influenced by China, which appointed half of the scientists writing it.
Some scientists argue that the virus probably appeared naturally and spread from animal to human, as in other outbreaks of previously unknown pathogens. So far, however, no confirmed animal source for COVID-19 has been identified. US intelligence agencies also emphasize that there is no evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was created intentionally as a biological weapon. It remains unclear whether it was created naturally or accidentally escaped from the laboratory.
Chinese authorities have consistently rejected the theory of the origin of the coronavirus in a laboratory as baseless and politically motivated. They also suggested that the virus actually came from outside of China, without providing any evidence of this.
