Police officers dealing with combating cybercrime are looking for people who may have fallen victim to those who – on parking meters in Krakow – placed fake QR codes. Drivers who wanted to pay for the stop gave the fraudsters their payment card details. The officers detained two people.

The police are identifying people who have been harmed as a result of fraud using QR codes on parking meters in Krakow. Drivers wanting to pay for the stop were redirected to a website with the city’s logo, where they provided payment card details, and these – as reported by the uniform – were then used by criminals for illegal payments.

Rapid police action

Officers from the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC) received a report of a possible fraud on July 13. A few hours later, the police found out who could be behind him.

On the same day in the evening, they detained two men aged 23 and 26 and a woman aged 21.

“As part of the procedural activities, electronic equipment used to commit crimes in the form of mobile phones, electronic storage media, SIM cards, computers and prepared stickers with QR codes were secured. At the site of the activities, dried marijuana was also found, as well as a significant sum of money in foreign currencies ” – we read in the CBZC communiqué.

According to the police, the men pleaded guilty and the court imposed police supervision on them and banned them from leaving the country. The woman was released after questioning. “Currently, activities are underway to identify all the victims” – informed the CBZC.
