Employees of the Theater Juliusz Słowacki in Krakow “categorically oppose” the election of a new director of the unit. The competition for this position was announced by the Małopolska Marshal’s Office.

The plans to announce a competition for a new director of the theater were announced in the Public Information Bulletin. The term of office of the current director Krzysztof Głuchowski ends on August 31, 2024.

“The competition may be announced, but it does not have to be. This is one of the options for selecting a candidate, but not the only one. As a team, we are convinced that at the moment the best solution is to continue the path we have taken together with our director,” the theater employees wrote in a statement read out by Andrzej Grabowski on Thursday at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre. “We categorically oppose the appointment of a new management of the theatre, because in our faith it will mean slowing down development and squandering the achievements we have achieved in recent years” – they emphasized.

Competition for the director of the theater

Thursday’s meeting at the theater was organized in response to the information published on Tuesday by the Board of the Małopolskie Voivodeship about the intention to announce a competition for a candidate for the position of director of the Teatr im. J. Słowacki. The information announced that the competition procedure will start on July 17, and its expected completion date is October 31.

On the same day, the theater received a response from Marshal Witold Kozłowski to the letters of trade unionists from the turn of May and June, in which they argued about the rightness of extending the term of office of the current director and tried to resign from the plans to announce a competition for this position. Among the arguments, they mentioned the theater’s “best artistic and organizational condition for years”, the ability to manage the company by the current management, as well as the legal possibility of extending the term of office.

“Competition mode is the basic mode”

In response, Marshal Witold Kozłowski pointed out that the Słowacki Theater is included in the annex to the regulation of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of July 30, 2015. on the list of local government cultural institutions in which a candidate for the position of director is selected through a competition.

– According to the management board, a competition is the most transparent form of selecting a candidate for this position. Taking into account the regulations, primarily the fact that the Słowacki Theater is included in the annex [do rozporządzenia – PAP] Minister of Culture and is an institution of particular importance for national culture, this competition mode is the basic mode when it comes to selecting the director – commented the press spokeswoman of the Marshal’s Office Magdalena Opyd. – Of course, it is up to the organizer, i.e. in this case the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, which of these modes he will choose. However, the suggestion is that in the case of these institutions of particular importance, the competitive mode is the basic mode – she emphasized.

As she added, the decision to select the director of the theater in a competitive mode was taken by the voivodeship board on May 16.
