Cracow. Six thousand people ran in the Cracovia Marathon. Kenyan dominance, one Polish woman on the podium

Over six thousand people took part in the 20th Cracovia Marathon – a run over a distance of more than 42 kilometers on the streets of Krakow. Kenyans turned out to be the best, taking the first three places among men. Among women, a Lithuanian woman crossed the finish line first, followed by a Kenyan woman, and the third place was taken by a Polish woman – Ewa Jagielska. As part of the Cracovia Marathon, a race for people with disabilities was also held.

The 20th Cracovia Marathon took place on Sunday in Krakow. It is a run organized since 2002, in which runners from all over the world take part. In this year’s edition, over six thousand competitors from more than 50 countries appeared at the start. Participants competed on the so-called “royal distance” of 42 kilometers and 195 meters.

The event was held this year under the slogan “With history in the background”.

The scoreboard clearly shows the dominance of players from Kenyawho occupied the first six places. Lani Rutto was the first to cross the finish line, followed by David Kiprono Metto, and third – Ezekiel Kipkorir. The best Pole was seventh – Mateusz Mrówka.

Among the competitors, one Polish woman managed to stand on the podium. This is Ewa Jagielska. Before her, Lithuanian Lina Kiriliuk was ranked first, and Kenyan Ruth Chemisto Matebo was second.

People with disabilities always compete in the Krakow marathon. These include wheelchair athletes. In the categories of handbike, rim push and active wheelchair, nearly a hundred competitors took part, who also covered a distance of over 42 kilometers. Rafał Wilk, Krzysztof Plewa and Jakub Staszkiewicz took the first three places among men. In turn, among women, the Slovak Anna Oroszova turned out to be the best, followed by two Polish women: Katarzyna Lewera and Karolina Bronowicz.

The route of this year’s marathon largely coincided with last year’s, but the start and finish were moved closer to St. Mary’s Church. Within the sight of the marathon runners were not only the most important Krakow monuments, such as Wawel or the Cloth Hall, but also, for example, Błonia, TAURON Arena Krakow, the ICE Krakow Congress Center or the footbridge to them. In 2005, the runners appeared in Nowa Huta for the first time – during the fourth edition of the Cracovia Marathon, and returned there in 2018, after a five-year break.

According to the Krakow magistrate, the jubilee 20th Cracovia Marathon was also attended by 35 people who had completed all previous editions of the event.

The next running competition as part of the so-called Royal Running Triad will take place on September 24 – it will be the 16th edition of the Three Mounds Run. The runners will not have much time to rest before the event that ends the triad, because on October 8 they will run again, this time in the 9th edition of the Royal Cracovia Half Marathon.

Participants receive a medal for completing each run as part of the Royal Running Tradition. If they win three awards during the year – so they take part in each of the runs – they will receive a special medal hanger from the city. In 2022, over 550 people received such an award.
