Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski appointed a new administrator of St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow. The dismissed parish priest Dariusz Raś will be replaced by Stanisław Czernik. Until now, he was the administrator of the parish of St. Florian in Krakow, as well as the director of the Catholic Educational Center of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Krakow, a member of the Catechetical Council of the Archdiocese of Krakow, the chairman of the Economic Council of the Archdiocese of Krakow and a catechetical inspector of region II.

Information about the archbishop's decision was published by “Gazeta Wyborcza”, recalling that it was in the parish of St. Floriana Jędraszewski plans to live there after she retires. He will transition to it soon, in about 70 days.

Rev. Fr.'s appeal Rasia

Earlier, priest Dariusz Raś, who had been serving there since 2011, was dismissed from his position as parish priest of St. Mary's Basilica. Then, according to “Wyborcza”, the archbishop pointed to the results of the inspection carried out in the parish. Among other things, there was a lack of cash counting protocols, and Raś was also said to have accepted donations without the consent of the curia.

“For several years, I have had the opportunity to observe the life and activities of the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Krakow. Thanks to this, I am convinced of the great pastoral and ecclesial mission of St. Mary's Parish, which has been given by God, the importance of which includes both the centuries-old tradition and the importance of the parish temple , the sacrificial pastoral service of generations of priests, as well as the significant material patrimonium entrusted with trust to the Church by our predecessors in the faith,” we read in Jędraszewski's letter to Raś, published in December last year by Father Tadeusz Isakowicz-Zaleski (died January 9, 2024).

Currently, Dariusz Raś is still listed on the website of St. Mary's Basilica as an archpriest.

“Plain bastard”

The parish priest was dismissed and had to quickly leave the tenement house he occupied.

– In this case, episcopal authority was used in a ruthless and degrading manner towards Fr. Raś, as well as his parishioners who asked to meet the metropolitan, but were not accepted. It is a terrible shame that the curia treats a man devoted to the Church so ruthlessly. Darek has just returned from the hospital and in such a cruel way he loses the roof over his head. It's hard to call it anything other than plain scoundrel – says a Krakow priest from the parish neighboring St. Mary's Basilica in “Wyborcza”.

Father Kazimierz Sowa from Krakow commented on the matter on social media. “St. Mary's was conquered! The elaborate, though slightly rickety, legal and church scaffolding invented on Franciszkańska Street came in handy! (…) Nice pastoral program, no doubt!” – wrote the priest, referring to the location of the Krakow curia at ul. Franciszkańska 3. He illustrated the entry with a photo of St. Mary's Basilica, which is currently undergoing renovation and partially covered with scaffolding.

Controversy around the archbishop

Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski became famous for many controversial statements delivered during homilies. He does not hide his sympathy for Law and Justice politicians. In June 2021, he emphasized saying about Lech and Jarosław Kaczyński that “it is our duty to thank God for them”. In turn, in August 2019, the church hierarch used the term “rainbow plague” against LGBT+ people.

– Fortunately, the red plague is no longer on our land, which does not mean that there is no new one that wants to take over our souls, hearts and minds. Not Marxist, Bolshevik, but born of the same spirit, neo-Marxist. Not red, but rainbow – said Jędraszewski during the mass in St. Mary's Church on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising.

Last year President Andrzej Duda awarded Archbishop Jędraszewski with the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta “for outstanding merits in pastoral work, for promoting patriotic attitudes.”

Sermon on the “rainbow plague”. “Such words should not come from a priest's mouth”Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski spoke about the “rainbow plague” during his sermon. During the mass on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the archbishop so skillfully combined the Uprising, freedom and tolerance that he created an explosive mixture. And two weeks after Białystok, it sounds dangerous. Tomasz Pupiec | Facts in the afternoon
