Cracow. The padlocks from the Bernatka footbridge will be melted down

The padlocks fastened by lovers there were removed from the Father Bernatek footbridge connecting Krakow’s Podgórze with Kazimierz. It was decided that they would be melted down and turned into a bench. They weigh about three tons.

The decision on the fate of the padlocks was made by the vice-president of the city, Andrzej Kulig, and their new purpose was announced by the Roads Authority of the City of Krakow

– Now we need to decide who will design the bench and where we will place it – said Michał Pyclik from ZDMK.

The decision to melt the padlocks into the bench was influenced by the fact that their weight is approximately three tons, which will allow the creation of such a sculpture. It was also one of the proposals sent to ZDMK in 2022. Residents also proposed that the padlocks be recycled and the obtained material be sold for charity purposes, but – according to officials – this is not profitable because it would only bring several thousand PLN of income. Residents also proposed moving the padlocks to another place, but they would have to be detached from the footbridge nets, which would be time-consuming and complicated.

Monday’s dismantling of some of the padlocks and nets is related to the renovation of the footbridge, which began that day.

Barriers instead of nets

Renovation contractors cut out the nets and replace them with stainless steel barriers. Old nets are dismantled in two meter sections. ZDMK emphasized that – for safety reasons – the installation of barriers in the dismantled sections must be done on the same day.

The works, which started on Monday, are taking place in the pedestrian area from the side of the bridge. Silesian Insurgents. During the renovation, pedestrian traffic was diverted to the bicycle path on the other side of the facility. The cost of the first stage is PLN 670,000. zloty.

The second stage of the renovation should start in the third quarter of the year. Then the balustrade on the bicycle path, from the side of the bridge, will be replaced. Piłsudski.
