Syrian carrier Cham Wings suspends flights to Minsk, the statement said. This decision is related to the migration crisis on the eastern border of the European Union, caused by Belarus. Previously, the governments of Iraq and Turkey made similar decisions. “This is a line that was used en masse by migrants arriving in Belarus. It is good that this road will be closed. Diplomacy in action” – commented on the Internet deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marcin Przydacz.
Thousands of migrants, brought in by the Belarusian regime, stay in the border areas with the intention of getting to Poland and the territory of the European Union. The community accuses the Belarusian regime of deliberately bringing people to Eastern Europe with tourist visas and then smuggling them to the West.
A large group of migrants has been living in the vicinity of Kuźnica, on the Belarusian side, since Monday. According to reports from Polish services, migrants, with the support of armed services, make an attempt to cross the border from time to time. When reporting on the events at the border, the media can use almost exclusively official government recordings and information. Journalists have no access to the area under the state of emergency.
Another carrier is suspending flights to Minsk
Due to tensions at the border, Cham Wings Airlines, a private Syrian airline based in Damascus has suspended flights to Minsk, Reuters reported, citing the airline’s statement sent to journalists.
“Since the majority of Cham Wings passengers flying to Minsk are of Syrian nationality, (…) Cham Wings Airlines decided to suspend their flights to Minsk airport from Saturday, November 13,” we read.
“This is a line used en masse by migrants arriving to Belarus. It is good that this road will be closed. Diplomacy in action” – commented on Twitter, deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marcin Przydacz.
The last flight from Damascus to Minsk departed on November 12.
Earlier, flights to Minsk were suspended by the Iraqi and Turkish governments
This is not the first such decision. Direct flights to Belarus Iraq suspended this week. The Foreign Ministry there explained that it is about protecting Iraqis from people smugglers. The government also offered to voluntarily repatriate Iraqis who were stuck on the Polish-Belarus border.
Also this week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Turkey confirmed that the country has introduced until further notice, a ban on flights from its territory to Minsk for the citizens of Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Istanbul is one of the main air hubs through which migrants get to Belarus.
A state of emergency at the border, journalists are not allowed to work
Since September 2, due to the migratory pressure in the border zone with Belarus, 183 localities of the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodships have been in a state of emergency. Under the ordinance of President Andrzej Duda, issued at the request of the Council of Ministers, the state of emergency was first introduced for 30 days, and then at the end of September the Sejm agreed to extend it by another 60.
Journalists have no access to the area under the state of emergency. When reporting on the events at the border, the media can use almost exclusively official government recordings and information.
Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński said on Saturday on the RMF FM radio that journalists from editorial offices that have nationwide coverage will be able to work in the border area on the terms specified by the Border Guard. Such a possibility is to be introduced by the amendment to the act on border protection, which will apply after the end of the state of emergency.
