Government spokesman Piotr Mueller said that in connection with the migration crisis, further-reaching scenarios take into account the complete closure of the border with Belarus – We are sending information to the Belarusian authorities that it is possible if they do not stop their activities – he said. He added that “there is no feedback on this matter”.

A crisis continues on the Polish-Belarusian border. On Monday, large groups of migrants tried to force their way to Poland. The Ministry of National Defense announced that it was possible to stop a massive attempt to cross the border. Migrants established a camp near Kuźnica. There are over a dozen thousand officers of the Border Guard, police and army on the spot.

Government spokesman Piotr Mueller was asked on Wednesday in an interview with the Wirtualna Polska portal whether the “nuclear option” is possible in relations with Belarus, ie the complete closure of the border, blocking trade and any exchange with Belarus.

“In scenarios going further, such a scenario is taken into account,” he said. – We are sending information to the Belarusian authorities that such a threat exists if the Belarusian authorities do not stop their activities – he added. He said “there is no feedback on this”.

– One of the variants that we have in the analyzes is that officers of the Belarusian services, for example, will provide one, two, three people who are in these groups, and there will simply be a situation related to its use and then we will have a crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. Then, of course, the Belarusian authorities will say that they have absolutely nothing to do with it, said Mueller.

He stressed that “this is a typical manifestation of a hybrid war”, which consists in “as opposed to what was 50 or 100 years ago that the speed of dissemination of information is very high”.

The government spokesman announced that the Polish authorities would demand sanctions against airlines carrying migrants to Belarus, including demanding a ban on flights within the European Union.

Government spokesman on the possibility of launching Article 4 of the NATO treaty

When asked if, in connection with the situation on the border with Belarus, Poland would decide to launch article 4 of the NATO treaty, which deals with consultations in the event of a threat to one of the allies, he replied that “such actions are not excluded” and consultations on this matter are taking place. “The next step is to formalize this type of action,” Mueller said.

State of emergency

Since the spring, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions has increased sharply. The EU and its member states believe that this is the result of the deliberate actions of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, which instrumentally uses migrants in response to sanctions.

Since September 2, due to the migratory pressure, a state of emergency has been in force in 183 towns in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie provinces adjacent to the border with Belarus. A dam is to be built on the border with Belarus in the first half of 2022.

When reporting on the events at the border, the media can use almost exclusively official government recordings and information. Journalists have no access to the area covered by the state of emergency.
