President Andrzej Duda thanked the presidents of Lithuania, Georgia, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine, as well as the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska, for their support and understanding in the face of the crisis on the border with Belarus. “By defending our borders, we are defending Europe” – underlined the president in a Twitter post.
On Monday, Andrzej Duda held a series of talks with the presidents of Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Ukraine, as well as with the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska. The conversation with the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, concerned the chairmanship of the OSCE, the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and bilateral cooperation, said Jakub Kumoch, the head of the President’s International Policy Bureau.
President Duda presented the situation on the border to the presidents of Latvia – Egils Levits and Estonia – Alar Karis and thanked them for the support of both countries – emphasized Kumoch. Swiatłana Cichanouska, the president thanked for unequivocal support of Belarusian democratic forces for Poland.
“Our positions are the same: it is a deliberate escalation by the (Belarusian) regime and the European Union should react decisively,” Cichanouska emphasized informing about the conversation. “We cannot allow the dictator to escalate the violence,” she added.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced that he had discussed the expanding hybrid attack on the Polish-Belarusian border with President Andrzej Duda. “Lithuania is fully in solidarity with Poland. We are ready to provide our neighbors with any necessary support to cope with the challenge of illegal migration,” Nauseda wrote on Twitter.
Escalation of the crisis on the border with Belarus
On Monday, the Polish authorities announced a large group of migrants planning to cross the Belarusian border with Poland. Migrants are located near the border crossing in Kuźnica. From the latest information and video materials published, among others by the Ministry of Defense shows that they are trying to enter the territory of Poland by force.
On Monday afternoon at the National Security Bureau a conference was held by President Andrzej Duda on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. Earlier on Monday under the leadership of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took place crisis staff, who discussed the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border with the participation of, inter alia, Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński and the heads of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense.
Later that day the address was delivered by the Marshal of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek. It is scheduled for Tuesday extraordinary sitting of the Seym.
