The leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, referred to the tense situation on the Polish-Belarusian border in Gdańsk. As he stated, “it may be time to consider whether we should trigger NATO Article 4.” It concerns the issue of initiating discussions between NATO members in situations where the territorial integrity of any of them is at stake. Tusk added that the government “should immediately start talking to all citizens, including the opposition,” so that the public would know what was going on.
At the Polish-Belarusian border “the largest attempt to date by force to enter Poland by force began“- said in the morning the spokesman for the minister of the coordinator of special services, Stanisław Żaryn.
Before 11 o’clock, the Polish Ministry of Defense posted a recording from a helicopter presenting the situation near Kuźnica in the Sokolski poviat. The city belongs to the area under the state of emergency. The recording shows a cordon of officers on the Polish side and hundreds of migrants on the Belarusian side, at the border barbed wire.
On the recordings previously made available by independent Belarusian media, one could see hundreds of migrants with backpacks and sleeping bags walking along the road towards the border crossing with Poland, Kuźnica Białostocka-Bruzgi. Armed people in uniform accompanied them.
Tusk: we should consider launching Article 4 of NATO
The leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, addressed this issue during the Monday conference in Gdańsk. He admitted that the situation at the border worried him very much. “The real problem is that none of us know what the Polish government is going to do about it,” he said.
– Taking into account the fact that the Belarusian services are involved in this pressure on our border, in organizing groups of migrants, this threat seems to be more serious than the one resulting from illegal migration – he said. He added that “we are undoubtedly on the eve of tightening our relations with our eastern neighbor, which are not good anyway.”
– If there were to be any acts of violence, especially with the support of Belarusian officials or soldiers, this is exactly the moment when the authorities should immediately start talking to all citizens, including the opposition. The president has instruments like the National Security Council. What is most important, perhaps it is time to consider whether we should not launch Article 4 of NATO, said Tusk.
