A group of about 70 people, who formed on the Belarusian side at the border with Lithuania, is moving towards Poland, the Lithuanian State Border Protection Service informed on Saturday. Since the spring, the number of attempts by migrants to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland has increased sharply.
“A group of about 70 migrants on Friday began to move along the Belarusian-Lithuanian border towards Poland” – reads the VSAT release. As it was added, the group “formed on the Belarusian side, near the town of Orany (letter Vareny).
According to Lithuanian border guards, migrants, mostly young men, who are watched from the ground and from the air, do not try to cross the border. They shout that they are going back to Poland. They say that they were transported by force from Poland by trucks to the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
VSAT emphasizes that Lithuanian officers provided humanitarian aid to foreigners. Border guards threw parcels with food, water and other items across the border.
“We will not give in to any provocations”
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced on Friday to journalists that the country was ready to repel various types of attacks.
– You can be optimistic about the upcoming weekend. There is no reason to be concerned. Institutions and services do their job. We will definitely not give in to any provocations and we will repel all kinds of migratory attacks or other hybrid attacks – said the president.
Migration crisis at the borders with Belarus
Since the spring, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions has increased sharply. The EU and its member states emphasize that this is the result of the deliberate actions of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, which instrumentally uses migrants in response to sanctions.
According to the information provided by the government, there are currently between 2,000 and 4,000 people in the border area on the Belarusian side of the border with Poland. migrants, there are regular attempts to cross the border by force and provocation by Belarusian services.
