Svetlana Cichanouska in Vienna called on European leaders not to maintain contacts with Alyaksandr Lukashenka and his subordinates, at least until they stop repressing the Belarusian opposition, Radio Swoboda reported.
“Lukashenka cannot be retrained, he cannot be trusted, the regime does not understand the language of diplomacy,” said Swiatlana Cichanouska, who was in Vienna on Monday. – Dialogue should take place only after all political prisoners have been released – she added.
The Belarusian oppositionist pointed out that “the longer the political crisis in Belarus lasts, the more attractive the idea of reducing pressure on Lukashenka and returning to the so-called real politics is for Western leaders.”
– We can see it on the example of the crisis on the border (EU with Belarus – ed.): Lukashenka’s regime partially got what it wanted – an additional ID thanks to cooperation. It shouldn’t be the norm – said Cichanouska.
Two conversations with Merkel
In recent days, the president of Belarus has carried out two phone calls with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They concerned the migration crisis caused by Belarus at the borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
It was criticized by many politicians in the European Union countries. Polish authorities, as well as the authorities of the Baltic states stress that any decision on the crisis caused by Belarus on the EU’s eastern borders must be agreed unanimously and it cannot be acted on without consultation.
A spokesman for the German government stressed on Monday that Berlin did not agree to the previously expressed proposal by the Minsk regime to create a “humanitarian corridor” and to transport several thousand migrants from Belarus to Germany.
