The fires that broke out on the Croatian coast this week are being brought under control. The flames have devoured forests and meadows near popular resorts, threatening buildings. Even a weakening fire can be very dangerous, and in some places the weather can give firefighters an unpleasant surprise.
As reported on Friday by the “Index” portal, the fire situation in Croatian Dalmatia is slowly improving. Firefighters managed to control the fire burning in Skradin near Šibenik, where around 1,400 hectares have burned since Tuesday. In the afternoon, officers were extinguishing the last embers, but despite the favorable conditions, they remained cautious – the operation was hampered by thick smoke.
– While extinguishing the fire, one of the firefighters fainted. He was given basic medical assistance and then taken to hospital in Šibenik – the district fire brigade commander Darko Dukicz told local media.
Storms and gales
The fight against the fire also continued in Tučepi near Makarska, where since Tuesday the fire has consumed grass, low vegetation and pine forest in an area of about 700 hectares and has come dangerously close to nearby buildings. Firefighters from the region reported that 200 people are working at the scene of the fire at all times. The 18-kilometre fire line is being brought under control with the help of ground forces and firefighting aircraft.
In the village of Vrsine near Trogir, the terrain was the main obstacle to fighting the flames – aerial extinguishing was necessary. The fire spread to grass, low vegetation, maquis and conifers in an estimated area of 660 ha. At night and in the early morning, firefighters were actively extinguishing the fire.
The weather forecast for this area is not optimistic, however. According to meteorologists, Dalmatia is expected to be hit by heavy rains in the coming days. storms with gales that could fan the flames and make it easier for them to spread. “We pray for two things: that the storm will not be strong and that a new fire will not break out,” the firefighters from Trogir said.
