Former Mexican beauty contest winner Priscila Lara Guevara and her associate, who are suspected of stealing 45 bottles of wine worth more than 1.6 million euros from restaurants in the Spanish town of Caceres, have been arrested in Croatia. Their search lasted nine months.

The perpetrators of the “theft of the century” publicized by the media traveled all over Europe, trying to cover their tracks. A Mexican 29-year-old and a 47-year-old (Romanian and Dutch national) were arrested after nine months when they wanted to cross the border Montenegro with Croatia. This is the result of cooperation between the Spanish police, Europol, Interpol, criminal and border police Croatia and government officials Romania and the Netherlands.

According to the Spanish daily El Pais, the detainee is Priscila Lara Guevara, who has participated in a beauty contest in her country.

45 bottles of wine worth more than 1.6 million euros have disappeared from the restaurant

At the end of October 2021, 45 bottles of exclusive wine worth more than 1.6 million euros, including the only French dessert wine from 1806 valued at more than 310 thousand euros, disappeared from the hotel’s restaurant, Atrio, awarded with two Michelin stars.

One of the owners of the restaurant, Jose Polo, then testified to the police that an English-speaking “nice lady” and an elegant man arrived at a hotel in Caceres late at night. They used Swiss passports, which later turned out to be forged.

The woman asked for a snack, and the only receptionist at that time came down to the kitchen to ask about the possibility of a meal. The time he left his workplace was used by the man to steal. He packed the bottles of the best wines into three backpacks and immediately carried them to the hotel room.

Restaurant owner: It was like in a movie

The couple left the hotel with large suitcases in the morning. The locks on the double doors of the wine cellar were not broken. It turned out that the man picked it up. The hotel owners did not realize the theft until around noon, when the restaurant was getting ready to serve dinner. By then, however, the thieves were no longer in Spain.

“It was like a movie, everything was calculated and flawlessly executed, no witnesses, no bloodshed,” said Jose Polo. According to the owner, the robbery was most likely commissioned by some wealthy wine collector, as the thieves were only interested in the “jewels in the crown” of the Atrio restaurant, where over 30,000 bottles were aged.

According to the police, the suspects visited the restaurant three times before the robbery took place. Like the other guests, they were shown around the wine cellar. The investigation was carried out in Spain by a special police unit. It is not known whether the stolen wine can be recovered.
