The beginning of June took its toll on the people of northern Croatia. The region has been hit by violent storms once again. In places, there were snowdrifts reaching 70 centimeters. The damage is enormous, many farmers have lost all their crops.
Just a week after storms they hit the Zagorje region with hail, during the night from Thursday to Friday, a strong storm hit the same place. The discharges were accompanied by strong gusts of wind, rainfall and hail. There were hail drifts of about 70 centimeters on the roads. Almost 300 firefighters were involved in removing the damage after the storm.
– I must admit that this situation was also new for me. Unfortunately for the people of this region, all of this happened within minutes in a small area. Firefighters were unable to respond to all the calls and challenges that arose. The weather was terrible, there was a strong wind, it was heavy rain, and finally there was a lot of hail that you can see behind me. At one point, we had more than 36 calls in just two minutes, ‘said Manuel Lovrenčić, the police commander of the Krapina-Zagorje County Police Department.
As a result of heavy rains, water broke into houses. – We tried to stop the flood by putting clothes on the floor, but it did not help, because the water was about 10 centimeters, said Vladimir Bacan from the town of Koprivnica.
Thunderstorms in Croatia. “We need to shake ourselves off”
Everything that the inhabitants of the Zagorje region worked for was destroyed in just a few minutes. The damage is enormous, many farmers have lost all their crops. They hope that next year will be more gracious and less harmful than this one.
– What can I say? You can see that nothing can be saved. Everything is destroyed and there is not much that can be done except that you have to live on, said Ivica Broz, owner of the vineyard. “We have to shake ourselves off and prepare for the next year, which will hopefully be better,” he added.
Affected regions are to receive government aid. – Our government, led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, will do everything possible to help farmers. Our help will be swift and will relieve people who have suffered losses due to the weather. Unfortunately, all our farmers are always the first to feel the effects of natural disasters, said Marija Vučković, Minister of Agriculture.
