Enough of tyranny, lies and corruption – appealed the participants of Saturday’s anti-government demonstration in the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. A protest of thousands of people was organized in connection with the election of Ivan Turudić, a supporter of the authorities and associated with the criminal world, as prosecutor general.

The demonstration was organized jointly by 11 left-liberal opposition parties. “The problem with the nomination of Ivan Turudić is the last straw that broke the camel’s back, making further work in parliament impossible,” said the protest organizers.

“The state belongs to all of us, not just to one party (Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ) and the criminal underworld. HDZ hands over the power to protect the legal order to a man linked to the criminal environment,” the statement added.

A declared supporter of the Prime Minister’s party

The ruling HDZ proposed to the parliament the candidacy of Turudić, a declared supporter of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković’s party. The candidate is associated with people convicted or suspected of corruption, as evidenced by private messages from instant messengers revealed over recent weeks. Reuters reported that this concerned leaked information from the time when Turudić was president of the district court.

Parliament voted on Turudić’s candidacy on February 7, 2024.

“Enough of tyranny, enough of lies and corruption, enough of HDZ” – people shouted on Saturday in the capital’s main square Croatia. The media present at the site noticed that the issue of the new prosecutor general was not the only issue raised at the demonstration.

Its participants also mentioned broader corruption present in national politics, problems with housing, emigration and health care as motivations behind the demands for the resignation of the Plenkovic government, N1 television reported.

The head of government talks about the “gathering of the radical left”

The Croatian Prime Minister, commenting on the event, said that the protest is “a gathering of the radical left that has been in opposition for years,” the Jutarnji list daily reported.

The prosecutor general’s case is the latest in a series of corruption scandals that have hit the ruling party, Reuters reported, recalling that elections parliamentary and presidential elections in Croatia are scheduled for this year.
