Cuba. Downpours and floods. Six people died

Six people have died in Cuba in the past few days after heavy rains hit the country, causing flooding and flash flooding, state media reported on Tuesday. Thousands of evacuated people are starting to return home.

At the end of last week, the central and eastern regions of Cuba were hit by violent events storms. After heavy rainfall, the rivers overflowed their banks. Homes were flooded, roads were destroyed and bridges were broken. Some towns have been cut off from the world.

According to the balance of casualties and material damage published on Tuesday by the state media, six people died as a result of the downpours.

“An Extraordinary Phenomenon”

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in a teleconference with regional authorities that the recent downpours were “undoubtedly an extraordinary phenomenon.”

– Even in our country, where we are used to working in heavy rain (…) flooding has reached unprecedented levels – he announced. He added that the cause of such unusual weather phenomena is global warming.

Destroyed crops

Heavy rainfall also destroyed water treatment systems, numerous crops, including sugar cane plantations, mainly in the eastern provinces of Granma, Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba, and in the central province of Camaguey. The heavy rainfall that began on Thursday has eased since the beginning of the week and thousands of people evacuated from the affected areas are starting to return home, the Cuban daily Granma reported.
