Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made an unexpected appearance in Havana, where the fifth anniversary of the death of the Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro took place on Thursday.

Nicolas Maduro, along with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel and former Cuban President Raul Castro, attended the inauguration ceremony of the Center. Fidel Castro Ruz, where the letters of the Cuban leader who died in 2016 are kept.

Thursday’s celebrations were broadcast by the Cuban state television. The guest of the ceremony, Maduro, did not make an official speech.

The center is the only facility on the island named after this politician and soldier. A law passed in 2016, one month after Fidel Castro’s death, prohibits the naming of institutions, squares, parks, roads and other public places after the former head of state and leader of the communist party.

It is also forbidden, at the request of the deceased, to erect monuments, erect busts, statues or tablets in his memory and veneration. Regulations failed to prevent murals and posters praising the former leader from spreading on the streets of Havana. The law only allows the establishment of institutions whose aim is “research and dissemination of the thoughts and work of Fidel Castro”.

– I try to imagine him in the middle of difficult battles that he fought over many years. This inspires me (…) and I am still fighting – said the current president of Cuba about Fidel Castro.

Anniversary of Fidel Castro’s death

Fidel Castro was brought to power by a victorious revolution against General Fulgencio Batista. In 1959 he was appointed prime minister and in 1965 first secretary of the ruling Communist Party of Cuba. 11 years later, in 1976, as a result of the reorganization of the government, he lost the office of prime minister and assumed the chairmanship of the State Council.

In 2008, after 49 years of rule, Castro resigned as chairman of the Council due to poor health. In 2011, he ceased to be the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba. Castro rarely appeared in public after he handed over power to his brother. He died at the age of 90 on November 25, 2016.
