Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to pour out lava. Magma broke into more factories on Tuesday, where there are flammable materials. Emergency services warn – powerful explosions can occur in the area. About 500 people were evacuated.
More than half a thousand people from the island of La Palma were evacuated due to the infiltration of lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano into several industrial plants, which produced, among others, chemicals.
Bad air condition in La Palma
According to the civil defense service, the evacuees were residents of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane, located in the southwestern part of the island. He added that on Monday about three thousand inhabitants of those regions had to be evacuated because the magma that occupied the cement plant caused the toxic fumes to rise.
The road to Tazacorte was also closed on Tuesday morning due to intense lava flow. The services emphasize that any decisions on the possible return of the evacuated residents will be made only after analyzing the air quality.
The services also confirmed that there may be flammable materials in the premises of the plants that have been flooded with lava. There is a huge risk of a strong explosion.
Communication paralysis, closed schools
Schools were closed in the southwestern part of the island on Tuesday. About five thousand students remained at home. Classes to be resumed no earlier than Thursday.
Meanwhile, the airport in La Palma is again struggling with communication paralysis. This is due to the cancellation of 11 flights, several others were delayed.
On Tuesday, there were already 18 seismic quakes, the strongest of which was 3.8 degrees.
The lava from the eruption that began on September 19 caused damage to an area of almost 600 hectares. Almost 1,200 buildings were burnt in over three weeks. The total number of evacuated residents is as high as six thousand.
