The Spanish authorities have decided to create a new city on the island of La Palma. Everyone who lost their possessions as a result of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano will live there. The eruption has been going on continuously for more than two months.
A new city will be built in the southern part of the Canarian island of La Palma, where the volcano Cumbre Vieja has been erupting since September 19. It will be inhabited by people affected by the natural disaster.
Over 500 buildings
According to the project “Cumbre Vieja”, which has already been approved by the authorities of the Canary Islands, the new city will be built on an area of 400,000 square meters, the Spanish daily “La Razon” reported on Thursday.
According to the project of the Cumbre Vieja Platform for the Victims of the Outbreak, 543 buildings will be built in the new city. They will be inhabited by families whose homes have been destroyed by the lava.
The authors of the project revealed that mainly residents of Todoque and La Laguna will live in the new city. They specified that the new city will have, apart from the residential part, also commercial and gastronomic infrastructure, a sports center, a medical clinic and a church.
The eruption continues
Most of the more than 8,000 people evacuated as a result of the volcanic eruption remain in charitable organizations or in hotels. The authorities of La Palma have handed over to the victims of the volcano so far only five prefabricated houses. A further 12 such buildings are expected to be commissioned in the coming days.
By Thursday, in La Palma, volcanic magma had destroyed more than 2,700 buildings – both residential and other buildings. Lava already covers over a thousand hectares of land.
