The Gdynia Redłowo swimming pool is closed due to cyanobacteria bloom, informed the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate. Sanepid reminds that bathing in such water can be dangerous to our health.
Information about the closure of the swimming pool in Gdynia Redłowo appeared on the website of the Main Sanitary Inspectorate. The data show that the other beaches in Gdynia are free from cyanobacteria and you can enter the water there.
The Sanitary Inspectorate reminds you that the water level in certain places may suddenly change. At any time, therefore, a bathing ban may be imposed on other bathing areas. It will happen, among others when cyanobacteria blooms in coastal waters. Their clusters are observed on the surface of the Baltic Sea, they can move by wind and sea currents.
The decision to allow or not to bath in a given place is made jointly by the sanepid staff and lifeguards, who monitor the water on an ongoing basis.
What are cyanobacteria? Where are they located?
Cyanobacteria blooms produce dangerous toxins, so avoid bathing in water where they are present.
On its website, the Sanepid reminds that in the event of an abundant bloom of cyanobacteria, the station recommends an absolute ban on entering the water. Bathing in water contaminated with cyanobacteria can cause unfavorable reactions of the body: from a rash on the skin to reddening of the conjunctiva. If swallowed such water, gastrointestinal complaints may occur, including diarrhea, vomiting and stomach aches.
Cyanobacteria are not algae but simple microorganisms. They owe the green color to chlorophyll necessary for photosynthesis. Their natural habitat is both fresh and salty water. A special property of these bacteria is the ability to absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere, which is then converted into nitrites and nitrates. This feature allows them to live in a variety of environments.
Cyanobacterial bloom, during which poisons are released, depends on several factors. However, sufficiently high sun exposure and water temperature exceeding 18 degrees Celsius, as well as the lack of strong wind are essential. Another factor is the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea, i.e. the process of enriching water reservoirs with biophilic elements, resulting in an increase in trophism, i.e. water fertility.
