Russian military intelligence (GRU) is behind last year's cyberattacks on the board of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), as well as on some German companies, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said on Friday. Some Czech institutions were also targeted by cyberattacks by a group affiliated with the GRU.

On Friday, the German government announced that it was responsible for last year's cyberattacks on members of the Social Democratic Party German (SPD) and some enterprises are the responsibility of the APT28 group, which is linked to the Russian secret military service GRU. As reported by Reuters, hackers used a vulnerability in Microsoft's Outlook program to break in.

– A series of cyberattacks attributed to the Russian military intelligence service GRU targeted not only Germany's ruling Social Democrats, but also the logistics, defense, aviation and IT sectors, the Interior Ministry said.

Boss lady Ministry of Internal Affairs Nancy Faeser emphasized that “there is evidence that servers, in particular e-mail servers, of German companies were compromised during Russian cyberattacks.”

SPD, the party of Chancellor Olf Scholz, co-governing in Germany with FDP and the Greens, announced in June 2023 that in January this year the e-mail accounts of the party's management board became the target of a cyber attack.

Russian cyber attack on the Czech Republic

On Friday, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that a Russian group of hackers had carried out cyberattacks on state institutions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the method of operation and their goals corresponded to the business profile of the APT28 group.

In a special statement, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, using information from the secret services, together with foreign partners, strongly condemned the actions of the group that has been conducting a cyber-espionage campaign in European countries for a long time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the Russian Federation to stop such actions.

“In the context of the upcoming European elections, national elections in many European countries and Russian aggression against Ukraine, these actions are particularly serious and reprehensible,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. On Thursday evening, the North Atlantic Council, the highest body FOR THIS, expressed deep concern about the growing number of Russian cyberattacks.
