A 19-year-old Bulgarian girl disappeared in May 2017. Half a year later, her body was found – it was buried in a forest near Radomsko. A young woman’s phone was found in the apartment of a 34-year-old who was convicted of raping four women. One of the victims was supposed to be a 19-year-old, but the case of her murder turned out to be complicated for the justice system. Another verdict has now been issued in this case – a final one.

34-year-old Konrad J. is legally convicted of brutally raping four women who provide sex services. According to the prosecutor’s office, one of them, a 19-year-old citizen Bulgariaalso killed.

The court of first instance twice dealt with the murder of a 19-year-old girl. In the first trial, he cleared J. of this charge. After an appeal by the prosecutor’s office, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The defense appealed the judgment.

No decision was made at the appeal hearing before the Court of Appeal in Katowice. Judge Robert Kiryłow, spokesman for the Court of Appeal in Katowice, explained that due to the complicated nature of the case, the court postponed the announcement of the verdict until March 13.

The verdict was delivered on Monday. The court sentenced the 34-year-old to life imprisonment. He upheld the judgment of the Częstochowa district court, making a slight correction in the description of the act.

The reasoning for the ruling was undisclosed. The judgment is final. The defense may appeal to the Supreme Court.

Sentenced to 17 years for rapes

The prosecutor’s office accused J. – a resident of the Mazowieckie Voivodship – of raping four women and killing one of them, a Bulgarian citizen. In the first judgment, from 2020, the Częstochowa court did not share this position. He assumed that J. also raped the woman, but eliminated homicide from the description of the act. The court then assumed that the defendant had acted in a series of crimes and sentenced him to 17 years in prison, finding him guilty of sexual offenses involving imprisonment and extreme cruelty. Due to the nature of the crimes, the trial was held secretly.

After the appeal of the Częstochowa prosecutor’s office, which demanded a life sentence for the accused, the Court of Appeal in Katowice quashed the sentence in the case of one act – rape combined with murder, ordering the district court to re-trial in this regard. In March 2022 the Częstochowa court sentenced J. to life imprisonment, this time finding him guilty of manslaughter. The court of first instance decided that the punishment should be carried out in a therapeutic system, and at the same time ordered a preventive measure in the form of a stay in a psychiatric institution. He awarded the victim’s parents damages in the amount of PLN 50,000 each. zloty.

Four violent crimes. Expert: Meets the criteria for a serial offender

The indictment of the Częstochowa prosecutor’s office was sent to the court in the summer of 2019. At that time, it informed that J. initially admitted to committing the crimes alleged against him and made extensive explanations. At the final stage of the investigation, he changed his explanation, not admitting to the murder of a Bulgarian citizen.

Violent crimes took place in 2017 in the Śląskie and Łódzkie provinces – in Wikłów near Częstochowa, Danielów near Radomsko, as well as in Piotrków Trybunalski and Dąbrowa Górnicza. During the investigation, expert psychiatrists examining J. concluded that at the time of committing the alleged acts, the suspect – previously unpunished – was sane. Psychologists also indicated that “the defendant meets the psychological criteria for a sexually motivated serial offender.”

Konrad J. was detained and arrested at the end of December 2017 after brutally beating and raping a 26-year-old Bulgarian woman in Wikłów. The woman provided sexual services on the national road No. 1. As the investigation showed, J. arrived there in a van and they drove together deep into the forest. In the forest, he took the victim’s mobile phone, beat her, tied her with an electric cable and handcuffed her and threw her into the luggage compartment. He then brutally raped the woman. He fled when the victim’s friend arrived at the scene. He was arrested the same day. He heard a charge of rape with particular cruelty.

During the search of the suspect’s apartment, mobile phones and other items were found, which later turned out to belong to other victims. Police officers linked J. to the murder of a 19-year-old girl who disappeared in May 2017, and her corpse was found in December this year in Danielów in the Radomsko district. They were shallowly buried in the forest. According to the prosecutor’s office, on May 22, 2017, Konrad J. arrived in a van near Danielów and went to the forest in the company of this woman. There, he allegedly beat her, tied her up with cable and wire, and brutally raped her many times. Then, in an unspecified way, he was to deprive the woman of her life and bury her corpse nearby. The victim’s mobile phone, purse and jewelry were found in J’s apartment.

In the course of the investigation, evidence was also collected that Konrad J. raped women standing by the roads – in Piotrków Trybunalski (in August 2017) and in Dąbrowa Górnicza (in October 2017). The perpetrator’s modus operandi in these cases was similar to other crimes: he took women by car to the forest for sexual favors, threatened to kill them, restrained them, severely beat them and repeatedly brutally raped them. He also took mobile phones, money and other items from the victims.
