The District Court in Częstochowa postponed Thursday's hearing regarding the extension of detention for the former vice-marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship and former vice-president of Częstochowa, Bartłomiej Sabat. The prosecutor's office accuses him of corruption.

– The court adjourned the hearing until Monday. It was about formal issues – the files were missing certain documents that the court should have before making a decision – said Dominik Bogacz, spokesman for the District Court in Częstochowa.

The Silesian department of the National Prosecutor's Office conducting the investigation demands that Sabat's arrest be extended for another three months. As Katarzyna Calów-Jaszewska from the press department of the National Prosecutor's Office informed PAP on Wednesday, the basis for submitting a request to the court to continue applying the most severe preventive measure against the suspect is the fear of fraud and the risk of severe punishment.

Detention by the CBA

Bartłomiej Sabat was detained by the CBA on October 23 last year. Investigators then charged him with two corruption charges – accepting a financial benefit and making the performance of official duties conditional on obtaining such benefits. They concern both Bartłomiej Sabat's function as deputy marshal and his previous position as vice-president of Częstochowa. As the defense reported then, the suspect gave explanations and pleaded not guilty.

On October 25, the Katowice-Zachód District Court agreed to the prosecutor's request to arrest the suspect for three months (on the same day, Sabat resigned as deputy marshal, and the regional council later elected Leszek Pietraszek in his place). A few weeks later, the Katowice district court did not accept the defense's complaint against the use of detention. The suspect faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

In the same investigation, three other people were also charged who, according to investigators, paid bribes to Bartłomiej Sabat. They face six months to eight years in prison. Libertarian preventive measures were applied to them.

More allegations

According to the November announcement by the CBA, Bartłomiej Sabat accepted financial and personal benefits at least several times in connection with the functions he held. The officers then recalled that they had secured documentation belonging to several business entities from the Częstochowa and Katowice areas, as well as from the Częstochowa City Hall and the Silesian Marshal's Office. As described by the representatives of the Bureau, this material is examined in terms of the provision of services by various business entities and their obtaining favor from local government units in the Silesian Voivodeship in exchange for providing financial and personal benefits.

In that announcement, the CBA reminded that people who got involved in corruption and provided financial benefits have the opportunity to benefit from the so-called no criminal record clause – if they notify the law enforcement authorities about it.

After his arrest, Bartłomiej Sabat was suspended as a member of the Civic Platform. He served as vice-chairman of the party's Częstochowa structures, as well as a member of the board of the Silesian region. In the recent local elections, he was elected to the Silesian assembly from the KO list and joined the new management board supported by KO, Third Way and the Left. Previously, he was a councilor and vice-chairman of the Częstochowa City Council, as well as vice-president of the city.
