A cyclist fell right in front of a public transport bus in Częstochowa. – It was wet, I was going downhill, 50 mph. I saw this cyclist on the sidewalk. The closer I got to him, the closer he got to the edge. I watched him and thought what to do if he fell over. I knew I wouldn’t brake – Mrs. Agnieszka, driving a city bus in Częstochowa, tells how she avoided running over a cyclist.
A dangerous situation involving a cyclist and a city bus in Aleja Niepodległości in Częstochowa occurred in the second half of February. On Wednesday (March 1), the Municipal Transport Company published a recording from the bus’s external camera.
Behind the wheel sat Agnieszka Pęczak, who has over 30 years of experience as a driver. He has been driving buses for five years, out of passion. “I’ve never had a situation like this before,” she says of the incident with the cyclist. He adds: – It is always a difficult choice for a driver: to hit one person or to cause a collision with many drivers. I am satisfied with the maneuver I performed.
Bus driver: I watched him and thought what to do if he fell over
Agnieszka was driving on the left lane of a two-lane sloping avenue. She drove from the Mickiewicz roundabout, i.e. downhill. She remembers that the odometer read 50 km/h, that it was raining and the road was wet.
A cyclist rode along the narrow sidewalk to her right, in the opposite direction. She watched him.
“The closer I got to him, the closer he got to the edge. I watched him and thought what to do if he fell over. I knew I wouldn’t slow down. Behind me was a column of cars, in the left lane I saw a truck in the mirror. The cyclist lost his balance and fell right in front of me.
Was she terrified? “Emotions came later,” he admits.
She turned left. Fortunately, the truck in the left lane was not yet at the height of her bus. – As I passed the cyclist, I stopped. I made sure that the passengers were okay and wanted to get off to the cyclist. But he was gone. He picked himself up and drove on, he says.
