Damięcki: Does being an artist relieve me of civic responsibility for the state?

I think honesty towards one’s own values is for a real viewer – regardless of whether he agrees with these views or not – important and worthy of respect – says Mateusz Damięcki in an interview with the tvn24.pl portal. – Once upon a time hate made an impression on me, now I just cut myself off from it. I am not interested in opinions about me, my views or my private life, expressed by anonymous frustrated people – adds the actor.
Mateusz Damięcki comes from an acting family of many generations, and began his career at the age of 12 – he appeared in the series “Wow” directed by Jerzy Łukaszewicz. He became known to a wider audience in the series “Przedwiośnie”, where he played the character of Cezary Baryka. Two years after the premiere of the series, he graduated from the Acting Department of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy in Warsaw and since then he has appeared in many performances, series and films. In August this year, a music video premiered in which the actor played the role of a drag queen.
Estera Prugar: You recently appeared in a new role – in SARAPATA’s music video for the song “Rework”, which tells the difficult and moving story of a drag queen living in today’s Poland.
Mateusz Damięcki: Yes. This is due to the director Sylwia Rosak. She called me and referring to our cooperation – very positive, but quite short until then – asked if I would like to play in a music video she is creating for her friends. She noted that while writing the script, she thought about me, which was flattering. At such moments, there is a certain feedback loop, because when an actor hears that the director wrote something with him in mind, apart from ennoblement – a bond is created between them.
From the moment I heard about the idea to the implementation itself, very little time has passed, but as an actor I am looking for challenges. Most of the proposals I get are commercial projects – that’s my job. So every now and then I need to change my professional everyday life. The creative possibilities in a show that you play for many years are really limited, and it’s not a criticism – it’s just the way it works. So I am looking for something that will satisfy my artistic ambitions. Thanks to this, several times in my life I have managed to implement projects that completely differ from my image. This was also the case with this music video. I treated it as a very interesting acting task, as extraordinary as the role of Gold in the film directed by Cyprian T. Olencki entitled “Furioza” about the environment of football fans and love that can break even the most dangerous arrangements (Premiere October 22 – ed.).
Are such tasks difficult for you?
On the one hand, acting is supposed to have the desired effect on the recipient, because we do it for the viewers, but on the other – I would like each project to make me a better and better actor who shows a new face.
