The most poisonous fish in the world, Lagocephalus sceleratus, was caught near the Croatian city of Rovinj, located on the Adriatic Sea, the “Politika” daily reported on Tuesday.

Seven individuals of a fish belonging to the puffer family were observed on Monday off the coast of the Croatian city of Rovinj – Lagocephalus sceleratus. This is an extremely poisonous species, whose poison is 1,200 times stronger than cyanide. One of the fish was caught at a depth of 19 meters and transported to the Sea Research Center in Rovinj. – Lagocephalus sceleratus it has an extremely strong poison, tetrodotoxin, which can cause serious health problems and death if its meat is consumed. It is assumed that a dose of 1 to 2 milligrams is lethal, emphasized experts quoted by the daily.

Fish belonging to the puffer family, incl Lagocephalus sceleratus, are considered the most poisonous fish in the world.

Deadly poisonous fish off the coast of Croatia

Lagocephalus sceleratus belongs to the puffer family (Tetraodontidae). This species migrates to the Mediterranean from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal. Most often, these fish occur in the Indian Ocean and Pacific waters. Due to its predatory nature and lack of natural enemies, the fish has a negative impact on biodiversity. It also makes fishing more difficult because it damages fishing nets while searching for food.
