The headmaster of the Warsaw elementary school, Danuta Kozakiewicz, spoke in TVN24’s “Fakty po Faktach” about how she answers students to difficult questions about the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. – I am talking about the importance of the border and I say that sometimes adults do not follow the rules that are loudly mentioned as the most important – she said. Dariusz Martynowicz, Teacher of the Year 2021, pointed out how important it is to leave autonomy and decision-making in schools to the authorities functioning in them, for example the parents’ council. “I have always believed and dreamed that the school should be a place of a culture of relationships, not obedience and fear,” he said.

Polish language teacher Dariusz Martynowicz, who became the Teacher of the Year 2021, and the director of Primary School No. 103 in Warsaw, Danuta Kozakiewicz, talked in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 about how to talk to children about the situation at the Polish-Belarusian border.

“We talk a lot about the Convention on the Rights of the Child and at the same time children are sent to the forest”

As Kozakiewicz said, children “want to talk to adults on this subject, because we teach our students at school: ask if you don’t understand”. “And at that point the children stopped understanding a lot,” she explained.

– Children ask me very difficult questions, for example such: we talk a lot about the Convention on the Rights of the Child and at the same time children are sent to the forest, where there is winter, hunger and a very bad situation. We are convinced that the child is a great value and at the same time the children are sent to the forest. Director, please explain to me why this is happening, why one does not agree with the other “- she said.

“Mom, are these children from the forest still alive?” What to answer and how

She also admitted that she “really has a problem”. – I present the situation, talk about the importance of the border and say that sometimes adults do not apply those rules that are loudly mentioned as the most important – said Kozakiewicz.

Martynowicz: I dreamed that the school would be a place of a culture of relationships, not obedience and fear

Martynowicz, on the other hand, referred to the situation in schools. “I have always believed and dreamed that the school should be a place of a culture of relationships, not obedience and fear,” he said. As he assessed, “this autonomy still functions in schools”, because the decision-making bodies are to a large extent bodies such as the parents ‘council or the students’ council.

He admitted that emerging ideas to entrust more power to probation officers “did not like” him. “I don’t think they will lead to anything good,” he added.
