Foreign Secretary David Cameron conducted a video call with a person impersonating former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, the British Foreign Office announced on Friday.

Although the video call clearly looked like a conversation with Petro Poroshenko, after it ended the Foreign Minister became suspicious. The ministry conducted an investigation and confirmed that the conversation was a hoax, the British Foreign Office said in a statement.

Publicizing the hoax

The statement did not disclose any details about what was discussed, except that the person impersonating Poroshenko asked Minister Cameron for contact details of other people. The Foreign Office stressed that Cameron had made the hoax public “in the event that the Foreign Secretary's video was manipulated and then used, and to ensure that others were aware of this danger.”

“While regretting his mistake, the Foreign Minister believes it is important to draw attention to such behavior and increase efforts to counter the use of disinformation,” it said.

As reported by the BBC, the ministry said that the conversation took place “in recent days”, without specifying who could actually call Cameron and how he managed to contact the ministry's representatives.

Deceived by fake interlocutors

Cameron is not the first member of the British government to be deceived in this way. In March 2022, three weeks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine Then-Defense Minister Ben Wallace revealed that he received a call from a scammer pretending to be Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The then Home Secretary Priti Patel also reported about a similar incident.
