At the end of May, 33-year-old pregnant Dorota died in a hospital in Nowy Targ. The woman was there in the fifth month of pregnancy after the waters had broken. She died three days later from septic shock. – When a woman’s life and health is in danger, Polish law leaves no doubt. Abortion is never an easy choice, but sometimes it is simply a necessity, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, commenting on the death of the 33-year-old. In the Sejm, the deputy of the Left, Katarzyna Kotula, appealed for honoring the memory of pregnant women who died in Polish hospitals. Not all MPs responded to her appeal.

The Katowice Regional Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation on the death of 33-year-old Mrs. Dorota, who was hospitalized in Nowy Targ on May 21 after the amniotic waters drained in the fifth month of pregnancy. Initially, the investigation was conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Nowy Sącz, then the case files were taken over by the National Prosecutor’s Office, which on Monday decided to transfer the case to Katowice.

During Dorota’s last conversation with her husband, around 9 pm on Tuesday, May 23, the patient felt very bad. She was vomiting and shivering. On Wednesday, she was diagnosed with septic shock. However, no surgery has yet been performed. That day her mother and cousin were supposed to go to the hospital to help Dorota wash her hair. They did not make it – the 33-year-old at 5.20 was already in a serious condition, and the ultrasound showed fetal death. At 7:16 a.m. cardiac arrest occurred. The woman died at 9.38.

Following media reports, the Ombudsman for Patients’ Rights ex officio initiated an investigation into the woman’s death. The hospital published a short statement in which it announced full cooperation with investigators and expressed sympathy for the family of the deceased.

Prime Minister: abortion is never an easy choice, but sometimes it is simply a necessity

The prime minister was asked about the death of 33-year-old Dorota at the Tuesday conference Mateusz Morawiecki. He first expressed his “deepest sympathy” to the woman’s family. – It’s something very sad. I do not prejudge and let us not prejudge today about any reasons, because today they are being investigated. I hope they will be investigated and released to the public very soon, he said.

– I want to say unequivocally that when a woman’s life and health is in danger, Polish law leaves no doubt: a woman’s life and health must be saved. Abortion is never an easy choice, but sometimes it is simply a necessity and Polish law is clear here: abortion is allowed in all such cases, whenever there is any threat to the woman’s life and health. It must be saved. A woman’s life and health are the most important here, declared the head of the government.

Morawiecki added that “if any additional guidelines are needed, they will be issued.” – I know that the guidelines of the Ministry of Health in this regard were issued probably several months ago, so I am asking that no one hide behind the lack of guidelines or any fears – he said.

– Abortion is allowed in Poland in a situation where a woman’s life and health are at risk – he repeated.

“Iza, Justyna, Ania, Agnieszka, Dorota. They are all dead”

On Tuesday, in the Sejm, shortly after the Prime Minister’s conference, attention was paid to the death of a pregnant woman. – Iza, Justyna, Ania, Agnieszka, Dorota. They are all dead. They died because of you. They died because you introduced your ideology to hospitals and you are responsible, said Katarzyna Kotula from the Sejm rostrum.

– In Polish hospitals, women die under the care of doctors, and these doctors, instead of treating and saving women’s lives, cover themselves with relics John Paul II and the conscience clause, she said. – Stop killing women. No more conscientious objection. End of sick ideology – she stressed. The MP appealed for a minute of silence to honor the memory of the dead, pregnant women.

“It is because of you, because of your politics, that Polish women are afraid to have children”

After a symbolic minute of silence, an MP from the Civic Coalition Barbara Nowacka she pointed out that some deputies did not stand up after Mrs Kotula’s appeal. Representatives of the ruling coalition, but also politicians of the Confederation and the president of the Polish People’s Party remained in the seats Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Nowacka admitted that “it is a sad picture of a parliament in which right-wing deputies do not want to honor the memory of women who die in hospitals.” – What was wrong with getting up? How can you look yourself in the face? she asked. – It is because of you, because of your politics, that Polish women are afraid to have children – she noted.

– Mr. Kaczynski, where are you? The prime minister comes out and talks about the new guidelines, the minister comes out and says: “Maybe we’ll look into it.” What do you want to lean on? You are to immediately save women who are dying in Polish hospitals. Mr. Kaczyński had already given his guidelines, only then he sat in the front row and said that it is important that (the child) is born, even deformed, we will baptize and give it a name. What name would Dorothy give to her child? What name would Justyna give her child? she asked.

Minister of Health wants to “finish the guidelines”

On Monday, the Minister of Health spoke about the matter Adam Niedzielski. At the conference, he assured that “every woman in this country has the right, in the event of a threat to her health or life, to terminate her pregnancy, i.e. to abortion.” “These two conditions should be treated separately,” he said.

– This right to abortion has also been clarified at my request – he reminded. These are guidelines presented by two consultants: in the field of obstetrics and gynecology and in the field of perinatology.

– On November 7, 2021, after the first events that raised doubts related to the case of a pregnant patient in Pszczyna, I asked consultants for detailed guidelines on how to proceed in a situation where the patient’s life and health are at risk. These conditions (…) very clearly indicated the woman’s decision, the patient’s decision, which in this situation is also important in the process of making the final decision – said the head of the Ministry of Health.

Niedzielski announced that a new team would be formed in this regard. – Today, I will appoint a team that will prepare even more detailed guidelines, with a larger group of experts, not just two consultants in the field of gynecology, obstetrics and perinatology – he declared.
