A policeman was fatally shot during a road check on the night from Friday to Saturday in western Norway. In addition, the driver of the stopped vehicle also died on the spot. This is the first death of a police officer on duty in this country since 2010.
A police patrol responding to the report stopped a suspicious car with two people traveling in it near Jaeren. After a while, a shooting broke out, resulting in the death of one of the policemen and the driver of the stopped car. The second officer was injured and was transported by helicopter to the University Hospital in Stavanger.
The police do not provide detailed circumstances of the incident. It is known that the second person traveling in the stopped car was not injured.
A special police unit from the Rogaland region was dispatched to the site. PST, Norway's internal security agency, was also involved in the investigation.

The first death of a policeman on duty since 2010
This is the first time in 14 years Norway case of death of a policeman on duty. In 2010, a 58-year-old officer died of knife wounds in Mo i Rana in the central part of the country. In 2004, in Stavanger, while chasing the perpetrators of the largest theft in Norwegian history, Arne Sigve Klungland, the commander of the operation, was shot.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed deep regret about the tragic incident near Jaeren. The Minister of Justice and Security, Emilie Enger Mehl, established a crisis team and directed additional forces to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
