On Wednesday, the European Parliament held a debate on Poland, including the “lex Tusk” act. – The new law violates the principle of democracy and the principle of legality (…). Poland was given 21 calendar days to respond to the letter of formal notice, said European Union Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders.

The EU Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, said that the European Commission is following with concern the developments regarding the “lex Tusk” act. – The new law establishes a special commission to investigate Russian influence, inter alia, on senior state officials in 2007-2022 to the detriment of the public interest. It gives this administrative body considerable powers, in particular to initiate investigations, organize public hearings, qualify certain persons as Russian-influenced decision-makers and take so-called countermeasures against these persons. This could be used to unduly interfere with the democratic process, he said.

Commissioner Reynders: 21 days to respond

He reminded that after a thorough assessment, the Commission decided on June 8 to initiate infringement proceedings against Poland. – The Commission considers, inter alia, that the new law violates the principle of democracy and the principle of legality (…). Poland was given 21 calendar days to respond to the letter of formal notice, he pointed out. He informed that he was in contact with the Polish authorities on this matter and received information that amendments to the act had been made to amend it. – We see that there is a certain concession on the part of Poland – he said. Reynde. He appealed “not to elect new members of the committee until the amendments are implemented”.

Belka: This is a cruel joke about Poles

– This is a cruel joke with Poles – said Marek Belka, MEP from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group, who described the Russian Influence Commission as a creation “from the times of Stalinism, a hood court that takes away the defense of the so-called defendants and relieves members of committee, as if they knew in advance that they had nothing to fear.

“The most important thing is the Kremlin’s silence, they are happy,” he added.

Szydło: the rule of law is not violated in Poland

– In Poland, the rule of law is not violated, there is no such problem. The opposition has a problem with itself, as it cannot accept the election results, said the MEP PIS Beata Szydlo. She described the debate on Poland as a “smoke screen” against the Chancellor’s attempt to break European treaties German Olaf Scholz and his proposal to change the voting system in the Council of the European Union.

“We are the guardians of the European rule of law,” she added.
