Europe should start building autonomy in the field of defense – said Josep Borrell, the head of EU diplomacy during the debate in the European Parliament on EU-US relations. “NATO is the main tool of our collective defense, but crisis management in the EU’s immediate neighborhood should be primarily the responsibility of the Union,” assessed Borrell.
The United States continues to be the Union’s closest strategic partner. However, after what happened in Afghanistan, the US sent a clear signal on how it wants to reorganize its priorities, mainly towards China. We should be ready to adapt to the new situation and assume our share of responsibility for maintaining peace and security in the world, stressed Josep Borrell, the head of EU diplomacy on Tuesday, during the debate in the European Parliament on EU-US relations.
– Increased autonomy in defense matters must be built. NATO is the main tool of our collective defense, but crisis management in the EU’s immediate neighborhood should be primarily the responsibility of the Union, said the head of EU diplomacy.
Postulate to create a “transatlantic political council”
During the debate, on behalf of the largest faction in the European Parliament – the European People’s Party – Zeljana Zovko called for the creation of a “transatlantic political council”, which would facilitate communication between Brussels and Washington and prevent “unnecessary tensions”.
Dragos Tudorache from the liberal Renew faction, referring to the emergence of a military-technological pact between the US, Great Britain and Australia (AUKUS), said that the allies should be honest with each other.
– In the context of recent events, our overseas allies must understand that partners and allies consult each other before making important strategic decisions. (…) In addition, our American friends must understand that Europe is strong and capable of acting – argued Tudorache, reiterating the postulate of reforming the voting system in the EU Council in matters related to foreign policy by a qualified majority.
Political dynamics of the USA and respect for the European Union
Marco Zanni, a representative of the right-wing group, Identity and Democracy, criticized EU leaders for not understanding the political dynamics of the US.
– [Donald – przyp. red.] Trump was not the problem. Just like today, the administration is not a problem [Joe – red.] Biden. For Americans, no matter what party they belong to, there are certain red lines. The national interest is more important than the rest. We must be aware of this. We should not base our policy on sympathy or dislike of a particular American administration, postulated the Italian MEP.
Assita Kanko from the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) said that the EU must regain respect and ability to act because only then will it be a partner that the US can reckon with. “We must finally grow up in the global arena,” she appealed.
