A 66-year-old from Dęblin (Lubelskie Voivodeship) provided a payment card with a PIN number to his friend, who was supposed to withdraw money from the bank. The man took the cash and gave it to the owner, but he did not return the card. He used it for almost a month, withdrew money and made contactless payments. He was eventually arrested and charged. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Staff assistant Agnieszka Marchlak from the Poviat Police Headquarters in Ryki informed that on Wednesday (June 14) a 66-year-old from Dęblin notified the police about the misappropriation of his payment card. According to the report, the man has health problems and in March he asked his friend for a withdrawal of PLN 2,000 from his bank account.

“He shared his payment card with his PIN code. A friend withdrew the money and handed it over to the owner, but he did not return the card itself. The victim asked many times for it to be returned, but his friend kept giving other reasons why he could not do it,” she said. police officer in communication.

He lost about $10,000

The 66-year-old decided to take matters into his own hands and check what was happening with his money. He went to the bank, where it turned out that during the period in which his friend used his card, he lost almost PLN 10,000. According to the police, the 49-year-old “used” the card for almost a month and made “withdrawals and contactless payments for his own needs”.

“The 49-year-old has already heard allegations of theft by hacking into an account by using a payment card and a PIN code, to which he partially admitted,” Marchlak said.

He faces up to 10 years in prison.
