In the center of Zakopane, in the middle of Jagiellońska Street, there was a spectacular fight between two red deer. According to a naturalist from the Tatra National Park, such a spectacle is rare, even in forest areas. TPN appeals not to approach wild animals you encounter, especially not to feed them.
On Saturday afternoon in the center Zakopane There was a fight between two red deer. – The sight of fighting deer in the middle of a busy street is quite a surprise. Now is the time of the rut, which will soon end. At this time, bulls try to scare away potential rivals, but it is rare for a fight to break out, even in natural conditions. The fact that they are fighting in the middle of the city on the street is an abstract situation, said Tomasz Skrzydłowski, a doctor of forest sciences, a naturalist from the Tatra National Park.
Deer fight in Zakopane
As the naturalist explained, deer duels rarely occur because it is very exhausting and dangerous. More than one bull even lost his life in such fights.
– Deer forcefully attack each other with their antlers. The individuals that fought the duel on Jagiellońska Street were not very large, but with beautiful wreaths, i.e. antlers. The bull that wins such a fight starts breeding with a whole swarm of hinds in a given area – this is what happens in nature, but here the situation is different, because there are indeed hinds walking around Zakopane, but they are not large herds like in forest areas – he noted Dr. Skrzydłowski.
In his opinion, such behavior of deer in this place is the instinct that told them to fight when two bulls met. For several years now, hinds (female deer) have been walking around Zakopane, even in the city center. However, the sight of bulls, i.e. male deer, is rare here.
As the naturalist pointed out, this was a situation that occurred for the first time in the city near Giewont. A spectacular deer fight gathered a crowd of onlookers and stopped car traffic on Jagiellońska Street.
A herd of hinds with young ones is a permanent landscape of Równia Krupowa, located near Krupówki. Although the inhabitants have become accustomed to wild animals grazing here, it is a great attraction for tourists. The Tatra National Park appeals not to approach any wild animals you encounter, especially not to feed them.
red deer (Cervus elaphus) occurs in Poland in all major forest complexes.
