A mudslide has killed at least 20 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The crash happened in North Kivu province in the east of the country. Searches are still ongoing in the region, and authorities fear the death toll will rise.

At least 20 people were killed in a mudslide in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, the local administration reported.

The search continues

The incident took place in the Bolowa region of North Kivu province, located on the border with Rwanda. Chadracka Mbukanirwa Ndibanja, one of the local community leaders, said the landslide occurred late in the morning.

“Following this tragic incident, twenty people … have lost their lives and others are missing, the search is ongoing,” said Alphonse Mushesha Mihingano, spokesman for the governor of North Kivu, as quoted by Citizen Digital. He added that the death toll is likely to increase because there were about 25 women doing laundry at the site of the landslide, and the women were accompanied by children.
